The Blue Shakes of Cape Verde have beaten Liberia to climb the second spot in Group C with four points, when they came from behind to whipped hosts Liberia 2-1 in Accra, Ghana.
Albanian-based Van-dave Harmon put Lonestar ahead at the close of the first period to end the first half 1-0.
Despite seeing the hosts having most of the possession in the first half, it was the visitors who make use of the final half with most of the changes coming to their path when they missed from close range in the opening minutes of the second half.
Lonestar goalkeeper Ashely Williams was alert to stop Jamiro Monteiro’s effort from the edge of the area minutes after he was introduced, with the Blue Snakes trying to find the equalizer just from the break.
And finally, the visitors got what they wanted a couple of minutes later after the defense of Lonestar failed to deal with a crossing ball that landed at the left side of the pitch that allowed Jamiro Monterior to received a loss ball which he beautifully scored to restore hope for Cape Verde.
After the score got level, Cape Verde enjoyed more possession, posing several threats to their hosts, who sat back depending on counter-attacks. They came closest after 80 minutes when a substitute Monterior shot from the edge of the area was safely handled by William.
Liberia’s best chance of the second half came through a combination of play between Tisdell and Kpah Sherman that saw Tisdell firing from inside the box but he witnessed his effort parried away by the Blue Sharks’ goalkeeper.
But the visitors took the lead after 92 minutes through 30-year-old Gray Rodriguez after he weaved his move through the middle with a wriggling run before unleashing a ferocious drive that beat Williams from nearly 30 yards out.
Liberia could have saved a point for themselves with the last kick from time, but Kpah Sherman’s header from a close range went just wide, as the referee ended the game.
Cape Verde will be eager to continue with the momentum when they host Lonestar in the fixture return leg this Sunday, October 10, 2021.
