Opposition Senator Abraham Darius Dillon is calling on the Plenary of the Liberian Senate to launch a Legislative probe into the information provided by President George Weah about the extension of his trip up to December 18.
President Weah traveled to France on November 9 to attend the Paris Peace Forum and later went to Qatar on an invitation from the FIFA body for the opening of the World Cup.
The Liberian leader was expected to return to the country on November 23 but informed the Liberian Senate about the extension of his trip to December 18 based on another invitation to address the Peace Sports Forum in Monaco and the Biden Summit in the United States.
But, speaking with the BBC Focus on Africa Thursday, Senator Darius Dillon of Montserrado County said the information provided by the president about the extension of the Paris Peace Forum was untrue and misleading, thus craving the indulgence of his colleagues at the senate to investigate who is responsible for his trip and at whose expense.
Meanwhile, reacting to the claims made by Senator Dillon, former Information Minister Eugene Nagbe who traveled with the President said President Weah’s travel is in the interest of the Liberian people, galvanizing resources for infrastructure developments in the country.
He clarified that though the president is entitled to 2,000 USD per day under the travel ordinance, President Weah has not taken a dime, adding his trip to Morocco for Monday’s forum was sponsored by the organizers of the forum. According to Nagbe, Senator Dillon’s call for a Legislative probe in the President’s trip extension will not yield any fruit, thus describing it as a “bluff show ray”.
